PERMANENT JEWELLERY FAQ's

What is Bonded permanent jewellery?

Bonded is our range of permanent jewellery that celebrates special moments and connections in life. Permanent jewellery is a type of jewellery where a chain is uniquely tailored onto your body to create a seamless welded piece. Unlike traditional bracelets or necklaces, there is no clasp needed. However a clasp can be fitted if desired.
This type of jewellery is highly symbolic as a continuous chain with no beginning or end. It is becoming more popular as people use it to celebrate special relationships or commemorate important occasions.
Wear with confidence and enjoy the freedom of effortless accessorising.

Is permanent jewellery safe?

Yes absolutely. We use a high quality precision welding machine specifically developed for permanent jewellery. A welding spark with a very low electrical charge fuses a link onto the chain, around your body and not on your skin. There is a bright flash from the welding. We provide you with safety glasses to protect your eyes and a patch to protect your skin. We have over 20 years of experience in making jewellery and have completed professional ABT accredited courses where we have learned to weld safely.
We do advise that permanent jewellery is not suitable for individuals who wear pacemakers. Please consult with your healthcare provider before booking.

What are the different metals?

We offer our Bonded jewellery in three beautiful metal options, each with distinct characteristics:
Sterling Silver: A classic and popular choice, composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, for added durability. It's known for its bright, white lustre and is a more affordable option. However, it can tarnish over time, requiring occasional polishing.
14ct Gold Filled: A popular alternative to solid gold. It consists of a thick layer of 14ct gold bonded to a base metal, typically brass. This layer is significantly thicker than gold plating, and is 5% 14ct gold by weight, making it highly durable and tarnish-resistant. It offers the look and feel of solid gold at a more accessible price point.
9ct Gold: A precious metal alloy containing 37.5% pure gold mixed with other metals for strength. It provides the warmth and luxury of gold and is more durable than higher karat golds. While it's a more substantial investment, 9ct gold offers a long-lasting and timeless piece of jewellery.

In summary:

Sterling silver: Affordable, classic, but can tarnish.
14ct gold filled: Durable, the look of gold that is more affordable than solid gold , 5% 14ct gold by weight.
9ct Gold: Precious, long lasting, higher price point.

We choose these metals for their beauty, durability, and suitability for permanent jewellery. We're happy to discuss which option best suits your style and budget!

What if I want it to be removed?

We understand there will be occasions that your permanent jewellery will need to be removed. Simply contact us and we can remove it for you, and we can weld it back on at a later date. If you are wanting to remove it yourself, the welding site can be cut with a sharp pair of scissors snips. Alternatively we can add a clasp so you can wear it more easily.
If possible, please store any loose chain away from dust and light, in a small sealable plastic bag or box so as to prevent tarnishing.

Can I play sports with permanent jewellery?

Normally fine chains are used for welded jewellery which can still break or stretch like any chain when pulled. We would recommend having a clasp so your jewellery can be easily removed for sports.

Can I wear it whilst swimming?

You can wear it in the sea or swimming pool, although there is the possibility that silver will tarnish with the salt and chlorine in the water. We recommend rinsing it in water straight after. Any tarnishing can usually be removed with warm soapy water or an anti-tarnish polishing cloth. 9ct gold or higher would be a better option for frequent swimming.

Can I wear it through the airport?

Yes you can as precious metal chains are made from sterling silver and solid gold which are not magnetic so therefore do not set off the security alarms.

What if my permanent jewellery breaks?

Whilst the chains are welded to last a long time, and will be durable with proper care taken, they are not indestructible. We offer a 6 month warranty on the weld point itself for permanent jewellery that has been purchased with us. If the chain has broken due to a fault with the weld, we will not charge for rewelding the piece. However if the break is in the chain links, then there will be a small charge or replacement cost for the chain. The complimentary repair service is valid within 6 months of your purchase.
Please note we are not responsible for any lost pieces of jewellery

Why is my jewellery tarnished?

Sterling silver and other metals will naturally tarnish over time due to exposure to air, moisture, skin oils, and chemicals. To significantly minimise tarnishing, avoid direct contact with lotions, perfumes, and other products, and keep the jewellery clean with mild detergent. We recommend our gentle foam cleanser and provide a polishing cloth.

Please refer to the cleaning instructions below for detailed care tips. For a professional refresh, we offer a cleaning and re-welding service. Simply contact us to arrange an appointment.

Cleaning Instructions:

  1. Prepare a solution of warm water and a mild detergent, such as washing-up liquid.
  2. A piece of clingfilm could be wrapped around your arm/leg to protect your skin from prolonged contact with the soap.
  3. Using a soft toothbrush, gently but thoroughly clean the blackened areas.
  4. If possible, allow the soapy water to remain on the blackened areas for approximately 5-10 minutes.
  5. Rinse the jewellery thoroughly with warm, clean water.
  6. Pat it dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  7. Once completely dry, polish the jewellery with the cloth provided to remove any remaining tarnish and restore the shine.

Is there an age limit for permanent jewellery?

Individuals under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver form provided at the time of the appointment.
We don't recommend permanent jewellery for young children for safety reasons.

Can I purchase the experience as a gift?

Yes absolutely, we offer gift vouchers which can be redeemed against any of our pieces. Please email us here to purchase.

Can I return my welded jewellery?

As this is a personalised piece of jewellery custom fitted to you, we are unable to offer refunds for welded jewellery. If you have any questions, send us a message here or email contact@marialau.co.uk with the subject ‘Bonded’
